What I Make
Woodshop
I also sneeze when someone is cutting pine or oak.

Laser Machine
It's just like machining metal, speeds and feeds, and sometimes your part starts smoking.

Electronics Workbench
Amateur Radio anyone? Always use more flux than you think.

Machine Shop
I've been an amateur machinist since 2001. I got my first taste of Tap Magic at USF SAE. Ask me about the lathe I bought. I also TIG and MIG weld all types of metals, steel, aluminum and recently cast iron.

Composites and Mold Making
I've spent a lot of time coated in epoxy and vinylester resins. Someone let me use a chop gun and it was too much fun. Typically, I use epoxy and s-glass to build repairs for boats and such. The first time I build a carbon epoxy foam sandwich I knew something magic was happening. Watch this and get a jump start on anything epoxy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5nNadZKI6s

Sewing & Rope Work
Boat ownership means sun protection equals constant re-stitching of sunbrella or making new covers. Related to sewing, you may see me making 3 strand rope splices or double and single braid eye splices for various boat things. With the popularity of Dyneema, comes splicing techniques due to the instability of traditional knots in this slippery twine. One time someone thought they had bought me some antique vampire slaying stakes, they were just splicing fids.

Recent and Ongoing Projects
Tap Handles (On going)
I build custom tap handles (Faucet handles) for beer and other beverages. Typically out of wood, either blanks cut on the Shopbot that will have UV DTF stickers applied or laser etched wood with various fills. If you see me concentrating hard on the drill press im trying to center up the thread insert.

Amatuer Radio Antenna Build Night (2026)
I hosted a DIY antenna build party with the Chaos Koalas group in 2026. We built simple Ground Plane UHF antennas using steel wire and SO-239 adapters. Then we tuned them using a NanoVNA.

Adding Pages to the Wiki (On going)
User:Donw and User:Moss would call it an obsession of mine, and they are probably right.

My Space Philosophies
Mine, you can copy them if you want, but I don't force them on anyone.

Clean up after yourself.
Always leave time to clean up. If you need to leave by 9, stop work at 8:45, get a drink, then start to tidy up. You are never going to perfectly clean up exactly your mess only... So clean 5% more than your own mess. Just 5% more. If everyone does this, the shop will be cleaner than everyone left it. You already have the vacuum turned on, or the dustpan in your hand. Sweep up and put away your mess and a little bit more.

Tool Description
The ShopBot is a 3-axis CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) router. It is capable of cutting pieces out of 4 foot by 8 foot sheets of material (i.e. plywood or MDF); Smaller pieces can also be used.

It can make vector cuts (and pockets and drill holes) for shapes like boxes, circles, arcade cabinets, flat-pack furniture, gears, and airplanes; as well as carving 3d models of things like faces, terrain, plaques, ceiling medallions, door panels, or Carbonite prisoners.

Software
VCarve
We use VCarvePro for layout, toolpath creation, and to save toolpaths with post processing for ShopBot.

VCarvePro can import these formats:
* Vector formats: DXF, EPS, AI, PDF, SKP, DWG
* 3d formats: STL, DXF, 3DS, OBJ, SKP, V3M, LWO, 3DM, WRL
* These Bitmap formats can be imported and automatically or manually traced to generate vectors for cutting: BMP, JPG/JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, PNG
* Bitmaps can be converted into 3d models for carving using other tools.
* The difference between Vector and Raster images.

Import File Notes
Do not use SVG unless you are aware. VCarve will show it can import SVG files. However, Adobe generated SVG files will import proportionally scaled incorrectly (mostly shrunk by a small percent). Stay away from SVG file imports from Adobe softwares.

Creating or importing vectors in VCarve and assigning them toolpaths is fairly straightforward, once explained. Setting up 3d models requires more tweaking.

Members can get the VCarve Pro Makerspace Client for use on their own computers.
<blockquote>
The Makerspace Client edition will allow users to design from scratch or import their data from other packages and includes the ability to both generate and simulate toolpaths, however it will not save these in a format that can be understood by the CNC machine. To complete this last step though the user can then bring the VCarve Pro files from the Client edition into the Makerspace and save their toolpaths to cut on the Makerspace’s CNC machine using the Makerspace edition of VCarve Pro licensed and installed at that location. (Source and further documentation)
</blockquote>
Install v11.0 VCarve Trial Version (do not use 11.5). Going to https://www.vectric.com/free-trial/vcarve-pro to will download v11.5 of VCarve Pro Trial Edition. If it is a newer version than that of the hackerspace, see the pinned messages for download links to the correct version(s) (typically from google drive) in #cnc-shopbot channel on THS slack. When prompted to sign up or log in, you can select Download as Guest. Once installed, select "About VCarve Pro Trial Edition..." from the Help menu, then "enter the Makerspace ID" to connect the trial to the Makerspace client. This ID number is also pinned in the #cnc-shopbot channel on THS slack, as a file named <b>THS MakerSpace VCarve Info.txt</b>. This video explains the process.

Fusion 360
Many members use Fusion 360 for their toolchain (bypassing VCarve). This has been accomplished by going to "Manufacture in Fusion 360 to generate tool paths and export to SBP format." It is recommended you perform an "Air cut", with the router high above your work surface, before performing the actual cut.

Materials (what to use, and not use, it on)
* Wood (MDF, plywood, hard woods, soft woods (pine, poplar), etc)
* High density foam
* Acrylic?
* Metals can't be cut because the spindle (router) doesn't turn slow enough

General and Special Safety Considerations
This is not an exhaustive list!
* Always wear safety glasses.
* Read, understand and follow all warning labels, instructions and safety manuals.
* Hearing and respiratory protection are recommended.
* The ShopBot may start and move in unexpected ways. Stay well clear of all moving parts during operation. Warn any bystanders before you command the ShopBot to begin a motion.
* The ShopBot's router may create dust, chips, and larger chunks. These may be thrown from the cutter. Be aware of possible projectiles. Always wear safety glasses.

Classes
* Classes are offered on a regular basis.
* Check meetup for the next scheduled class: Tampa Hackerspace Meetup
* Recommended reading: ONSRUD Cutter LP - CNC Production Routing Guide

* Prerequisites
** Students must have the ability to generate toolpaths using one of the supported CAM tools (VCarve or Fusion 360). Generating toolpaths is outside the scope of this class.
*** There are separate classes for VCarve and Fusion360.
** Students must have completed woodshop safety before taking this course.
** This meetup is open to paid members only.

* Class slide-show deck

Pre-Use checklist
Before using the ShopBot, you should:
* Ensure that the gantry (y-axis) is square to the rest of the ShopBot frame.
* Zero out your X and Y axises to the desired location.
* Ensure you have the desired bit installed in the router.
* Zero out your Z axis.
* Triple check that your intended cut path will not impact any hold-downs
* Wear hearing and eye protection.
* Activate the dust collection vacuum system.
* Before hitting "Cut Part", do a bladder check.
* "Cut Part". You will be prompted to turn on the router. ("Spindle")

Post-Use Checklist (cleanup, etc)
When you have finished using the ShopBot, be sure that you:
* Return the tool to the traditional [0,0] position in the lower-left corner. Zero the axises if they have been changed.
* Install a standard cutter bit if you have changed to a specialized bit.
* Use compressed air to blow dust off the ShopBot itself, the computers, and the work bench.
* Vacuum or sweep wood chips, debris and dust off the bed and the tool.
* Sweep up dust and debris within 4 a foot area around the ShopBot.
* Return any other tools you have used to their storage location.
* Turn off the ShopBot CPU.
* Turn off the NUC (smaller computer).
* Unplug all electrical cords used and return them to stowed condition

Tool Use
Please take a class or ask for individual instruction

Tips and Tricks
For those who are looking to buy Bits, Here are the current Recommended Bits to purchase for your "Tool Box"
* Whiteside is the best bits you can buy, they will last as long as you live, and you can pass them on to your children provided you take good care of them.

Air Cut
If you are unsure if your cut path will intersect a hold down or other obstruction. Try a cut without the tool at the actual Z surface of your work.

# Do your normal X Y Z zeroing
# Raise the Z up 1-1.5 inches above the surface and re-zero the Z.
# Re-zero the Z,
# Load and run your cut.
# Watch it do full layer or more.
# Anticipate what the path will be when at full depth of cut (typical where crashes will occur).

* 3d formats: STL, DXF, 3DS, OBJ, SKP, V3M, LWO, 3DM, WRL

<blockquote>
</blockquote>

* High density foam
* Acrylic?
* Metals can't be cut because the spindle (router) doesn't turn slow enough

General and Special Safety Considerations
This is not an exhaustive list!
* Always wear safety glasses.

* Prerequisites

* Class slide-show deck

Always SAFETY LOCKOUT the device before any troubleshooting. This means, physically disconnecting the power from the unit, unplug and do not allow anyone near the outlet.

Feed is inconsistent
The feed rollers may be gunked up with sap which causes the rollers slip. Use a wirebrush on the feed rollers with a squirt of isopropanol or tool cleaner spray.

Feed rate and cut depth per pass may be too fast or deep.

ChrisChow: /* Tools */

We require a basic orientation and checkoff class Classes: Woodshop safety before using any of the tools in the shop.

The ShopBot CNC, SawStop table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer, and bandsaw require specific certification before use.

Please refer to the tool manual if you are at all uncertain on proper and safe usage.

Appropriate safety gear is available and required for tool usage. Safety glasses are required whenever shop tools are in use -- not just for the tool operator. Hearing protection is suggested for most tools but is required for the ShopBot and other routers.

General Rules
Safety
* Safety glasses must be worn in the shop. Glasses should have side protection and a Z87 rating. Safety glasses are available at each entrance to the woodshop.
* Closed-toe footwear must be worn in the shop.
* Hair must be tied back. Do not wear baggy clothing.
* Remove all dangling jewelry.
* Do not wear gloves when operating any machinery.
* Hearing protection is highly recommended.
* Respirators are recommended.
Acceptable Materials
* No metalworking in the woodshop
* Use kiln or air-dried lumber, MDF, particle board, or plywood.
* For the table saw, some plastics can be used with appropriate blades and cleanup. Ask a steward for approval.
* No reclaimed wood may be used.
* No pouring and curing epoxy in the shop
* No sanding of uncured epoxy (2 week cure time)
* No live edge / green wood may be run through the bandsaw, table saw, jointer, planer

For the Sawstop table saw, this is the conductive material list directly from sawstop. These materials may activate the Sawstop safety system. This list may not have all conductive materials.

*Conductive metal sheeting such as Aluminum or Copper.
*Grounded metal (e.g., the blade guard splitter, the riving knife, a metal jig, or a metal tape measure touching blade while in contact with the table top.).
*Relatively large masses of ungrounded metal, such as a tape measure not in contact with the table or a combination square or ruler.
*Foil-backed insulation.
*Mirror-backed plastic.
*Metallic paint layers (e.g. gold paint on picture frames).
*Conductive laminate layers (some countertops have a foil layer behind the Formica).
*Materials made from, or containing carbon, such as black melamine or plastic, some black paints, carbon composite or carbon fiber materials
*Electronic circuit boards (because of the conductive layers).
*Uncured glue layers (wet glue is electrically conductive).
*Wet pressure-treated materials (the chemicals used to pressure-treat wood can be electrically conductive when the wood is wet).
*Very wet, especially wet cedar.

Operating Rules
* No resawing without permission and guidance from shop stewards
* No guests. The woodshop is only for adult THS members with appropriate sign-offs.
* Do not work when you are tired, hungry, or otherwise distracted.
* Know where the panic button is.
* Operators of a machine are responsible for the safety of those around the machine.
* Don't interrupt people while they are using machinery.
* Wait for the machinery to come to a stop on its own. Don't try to help it.
* Do not be forceful with machinery. If a blade or cutter is dull, report it.
* Do not attempt to service machinery yourself. Report broken machinery in the #broken channel on Slack.
* Keep the shop clean by sweeping and vacuuming your work area and using the dust collectors.
* Always return tools to their proper place.
* Do not store materials in the shop. There are totes and pallets available for rent for materials. You may temporarily leave projects on tables. Label them with your name, the date it was left, and how to contact you.
* Sometimes the shop gets busy, please wait patiently without crowding those using machines.
* Do not spray in the shop. Spray outside.
* For brush or wipe on finished, please follow all directions on the label. Open the roll-up door and turn on the fan.
* Rags used for finishes should be set outside to fully dry.
* Always follow the rules for each machine.
* Use the best tool for the job.
* Do not set drinks on metal surfaces.
* When in doubt, ask for help or advice in the #woodshop channel on slack.
* Always be polite and considerate of peoples' space and time.
