We require a basic orientation and checkoff class Classes: Woodshop safety before using any of the tools in the shop.

The ShopBot CNC, SawStop table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer, and bandsaw require specific certification before use.

Please refer to the tool manual if you are at all uncertain on proper and safe usage.

Appropriate safety gear is available and required for tool usage. Safety glasses are required whenever shop tools are in use -- not just for the tool operator. Hearing protection is suggested for most tools but is required for the ShopBot and other routers. Respirators are recommended.

• Safety glasses must be worn in the shop. Glasses should have side protection and a Z87 rating. Safety glasses are available at each entrance to the woodshop.
• Closed-toe footwear must be worn in the shop.
• Hair must be tied back. Do not wear baggy clothing.
• Remove all dangling jewelry.
• Do not wear gloves when operating any machinery.
• Hearing protection is highly recommended.
• Respirators are recommended.

• No metalworking in the woodshop
• Use kiln or air-dried lumber, MDF, particle board, or plywood.
• For the table saw, some plastics can be used with appropriate blades and cleanup. Ask a steward for approval.
• No reclaimed wood may be used.
• No pouring and curing epoxy in the shop
• No sanding of uncured epoxy (2 week cure time)
• No live edge / green wood may be run through the bandsaw, table saw, jointer, planer

For the Sawstop table saw, this is the conductive material list directly from sawstop. These materials may activate the Sawstop safety system. This list may not have all conductive materials.

• Conductive metal sheeting such as Aluminum or Copper.
• Grounded metal (e.g., the blade guard splitter, the riving knife, a metal jig, or a metal tape measure touching blade while in contact with the table top.).
• Relatively large masses of ungrounded metal, such as a tape measure not in contact with the table or a combination square or ruler.
• Foil-backed insulation.
• Mirror-backed plastic.
• Metallic paint layers (e.g. gold paint on picture frames).
• Conductive laminate layers (some countertops have a foil layer behind the Formica).
• Materials made from, or containing carbon, such as black melamine or plastic, some black paints, carbon composite or carbon fiber materials
• Electronic circuit boards (because of the conductive layers).
• Uncured glue layers (wet glue is electrically conductive).
• Wet pressure-treated materials (the chemicals used to pressure-treat wood can be electrically conductive when the wood is wet).
• Very wet, especially wet cedar.
• Graphite cloth
• Anti-static Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polyethylene (contains carbon particles to make it anti-static)
• Charred wood (laser cut edges, Shou Sugi Ban)

• No resawing without permission and guidance from shop stewards
• No guests. The woodshop is only for adult THS members with appropriate sign-offs.
• Do not work when you are tired, hungry, or otherwise distracted.
• Know where the panic button is.
• Operators of a machine are responsible for the safety of those around the machine.
• Don't interrupt people while they are using machinery.
• Wait for the machinery to come to a stop on its own. Don't try to help it.
• Do not be forceful with machinery. If a blade or cutter is dull, report it.
• Do not attempt to service machinery yourself. Report broken machinery in the #broken channel on Slack.
• Keep the shop clean by sweeping and vacuuming your work area and using the dust collectors.
• Always return tools to their proper place.
• Do not store materials in the shop. There are totes and pallets available for rent for materials. You may temporarily leave projects on tables. Label them with your name, the date it was left, and how to contact you.
• Sometimes the shop gets busy, please wait patiently without crowding those using machines.
• Do not spray in the shop. Spray outside away from the roll up door so that fumes do not get drawn into the woodshop.
• For brush or wipe on finished, please follow all directions on the label. Open the roll-up door and turn on the fan.
• Rags used for finishes should be set outside to fully dry.
• Always follow the rules for each machine.
• Use the best tool for the job.
• Do not set drinks on metal surfaces.
• When in doubt, ask for help or advice in the #woodshop channel on slack.
• Always be polite and considerate of peoples' space and time.
